Don't you feel your heartbeat rise?
Your head tilt to the side as you curl
Up in the soft lavenders and chartreuses
Of the ever surrounding blanket?
All the while taking in the romantic scent
Of the ink on paper.
The constant connectivity to a
World so different than your own.
You submerge much deeper
Than a classic deep sea diver
With fictional people in obscure
Places that you met on page six.
The stories are always so enchanting.
You become charmed by imagery
With emotions you never felt. As a
part of a couple you've never met.
All leading up to the grande finale.
Falling. In. Love.
The timeless Happily Ever After ends
As the couple that dared the impossible
kindles the love that seemed hopeless.
But the last revolting twist is that extra
Mile you shouldn't have dove.
That extra breathe you didn't have.
Emotions trying to slow your heartbeat back
Down as you slide out from under the
Treacherously captive blankets
As you shut the precious book where picture
perfect is protocol; left with dried out wine
bottles and "half eaten" chocolates
Those books are like dreams. A great escape
But inevitably reality returns. No hand to hold
As the candles diminish. No tears to cry as
You throw the book onto the shelf. No one to
Run to in the rain. The books created fictitious,
superficial, imagined, real love.
